Mrs. Lucille Constance Taylor Gates, affectionately known as "Big Moma," of Hinesville was born to Mr. Willard Fennell and Ms. Francis Remington Cooper on March 31, 1924, in Homerville. She passed away on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at Liberty Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Lucille was educated in the Clinch County and Liberty County school systems.
During the early 1940s, Mrs. Gates' family moved to Hinesville. It was here that she met the love of her life and was united in holy matrimony to Mr. John T. Gates Jr. and to this union five children were born.
Mrs. Gates was a devoted mother and hardworking, performing various jobs on Fort Stewart in Environmental Services. In 1974, she entered the civil service workforce. She was really proud of her certificate recognizing for 10 years of services and retired in March 1990. She was devoted member of First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 21 years, John T. Gates Jr.; two brothers, Lee Fennell and Alphonso Fennell; three sisters, Ella Mims, Victoria Taylor and Carmen Woodard; her parents, Willard Fennell and Frances Cooper (reared by Roland Taylor).
She is survived by five children, Elmer (Gloria) Harris, Sherry Cunningham, John T. Gates III, Yvonne Gates and Wanda Gates; one brother, Charles Taylor (Dorothy); one sister, El Doris (Ernest) Jackson; grandchildren, William (Tammy) Bowman, Tavrio (Shae) Gates, Marlana Harris, Joy Audra Harris, Nicole (Darnell) Slayton, Dedric (Tasha) Gates, Charwana Gaulden, Steven Williams, Maya Gates, Adriel (Damion) Mays, Aaron (Latisha) Gates; a host of great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and a host of family, friends and loved ones.
Her wake will be from 6-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Dorchester Funeral Home in Midway. Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 124 Rebecca St., Hinesville. Her body will be placed in church at 1 p.m. The Rev. Dr. S.L. Thorne will officiate.
