John Walter Abbott Sr., 73, of Midway, passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah after a long illness with family by his side.

Mr. Abbott was a native of Lithonia who was born March 30, 1939, to the late Grady and Lucile Abbott of Lithonia. Mr. Abbott had lived in Liberty County since 1970, having moved here from Savannah.
He started his long career in the trucking industry as a dock foreman for Benton Trucking and later moved up to terminal manager with Gateway Trucking Company in Savannah. Mr. Abbott founded his own trucking company, Abbco Trucking. He retired in 1985 due to health reasons.
Mr. Abbott loved watching the Atlanta Braves and Falcons. He also enjoyed the outdoors and loved spending time with his family. Mr. Abbott was a member of Quacco Baptist Church in Savannah.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Timothy Allen Abbott, and four siblings, Hazel Wells, Ruby Wells, Fred Abbott and Jewel Abbott.
He will be greatly missed by all of those who knew him.
Survivors are his wife of 55 years, Gladys Lee Cook Abbott of Midway; daughter and son-in-law, Rita Abbott Dykes (Don) of Fleming; son, John Walter Abbott Jr. of Midway; daughter and son-in-law, Penny Lee Abbott Cox (Rodger) of Richmond Hill; two brothers, Tommy Abbott and Hubert Abbott, both of Atlanta; five sisters, Ethel Lister, Alice Frix, Joy Murphy, Anita Mitchell and Sequel Hadaway, all of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Leah Richardson, Ashley McCullough (Adam), Brittny Hilton and Zach Dykes; three great-grandsons Matthew Richardson, Jackson Abbott McCullough and Luke Gumataotao; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home in Flemington.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Goddard officiating.
Burial will follow in Daniel Siding Baptist Church Cemetery in Richmond Hill.
Pallbearers will be Zach Dykes, Rodger Cox, Adam McCullough, Jonathan Richardson, Danny Hilton, Fred Noles and Adam Lashley.
