Joseph A. Matthews, 75, of Hinesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center after a long illness.

He was a native of West Virginia and lived in Hinesville for the past 11 years. He served as an AP in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Nitro High School in 1955. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and AG Overman Sunday School Class. He was a truck driver for 25 plus years, working for Monsanto and Mason Dixon before retiring from DuPont Chemical Company.
He is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Juanita "Sis" Matthews, and son, Joseph "Marc" Matthews.
He is survived by his brothers, Ronnie Matthews of Winfield, W.V., and Harold Matthews of Nitro, W.V.; sister, Sharon Matthews of Nitro; daughter-in-law, Mi Suk Matthews of Hinesville; grandchildren, Ashley (Carlos) Matias of Hinesville and William (Taryn) Matthews of Salt Lake City, Utah; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 5-7p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. His funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Hinesville First United Methodist with a 1 p.m. burial at Georgia Veterans Memorial Park in Glennville with military honors. The Rev. Dr. Rich Wright will be officiating.
