BEREZIUK, Donald "Jack" Robert
May 24, 1950 – Vita, Manitoba
March 8, 2018 – Canmore, Alberta
Jack, beloved husband of 34 years, of Mary Janet Bereziuk (nee Larocque) of the MD of Bighorn, AB, passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the ageof 67 years, after living courageously with cancer for several years.
Jack was born in Vita, Manitoba in a rural setting which set the stage for a life of loving the outdoors, nature, the quiet of the land. He lovedhiking, skiing, snow shoeing, xcountry skiing, fishing and of courshis love of hunting. Finding the game trail, learning how the animals moved from season to season to different feeding grounds were all part of what interested him. He was a member of the Cochrane Hiking Club and a devoted member of the Spray Lakes Sawmills Recreation Centre. A life of reading and learning was key. Long before he attended university as a mature student he had a list of books that he felt should be read, from the classics to academic. Jack's formal education started in atwo-room school house in Rackham, Manitoba with his mother, Nettie, as his teacher. Jack went to Mohawk College for Textile technology, University of Guelph where he completed his BSc in Human Biology and University of Calgary for a Masters in Environmental Design. Jack's travels started before he met Mary with extended trips to a then more peaceful Afghanistan, India & Nepal. Mary and Jack travels took them kayaking in Haida Gwaii, hiking in Bolivia, Machu Pichu, Argentina, and Uruguay, visiting friends in Indonesia and skiing in Japan, to mention a few adventures. Our lovely Cedar House Cottage in PEI was a summer refuge for many years, where he was able to run on the beach, eat fresh seafood and listen to a variety of music. Jack was a listener, not a talker, preferring the quiet of the mountains and insightfulness of books. In quiet moments if you didn't rush himthe conversations were rich. Jack will be missed, for his smile, sense of humour and pragmatic approach to life.
The family would like to thank the large healthcare team that help Jack enjoy life to the fullest in the last few years, Dr. E. Weis for caring for his Uveal Melanoma and eye sight and answering all Jack's enquiries, Dr. C. Owen for guiding us through his lymphoma treatments and the very talented Palliative team including Dr. J. Hughes, J. Hui, G. Ho, along with some of the best nurses I have met on the Palliative team of Mary W. and Jill.
