GELLATELY, Gertrude Mary
("Gert") (nee Walsh)
Nov. 23, 1920 - Nov. 13, 2015
Gertrude Mary Gellately (nee Walsh) went gently to join
her husband Jack on Friday, November 13, 10 days shy of
her 95th birthday. She will be sadly missed by her 8 children
(Bob Gellately (Marie), Ian Gellately (Bonnie), Neil Gellately, Pat
Gellately, Dale Byrne, Jo Koval, Jane Lutes, Catherine Scheers
(Chris); 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, sisters Helen Haraldson, Kay
O'Rourke and Marie Murray, brother Brendan Walsh (Mary), and many friends and
relatives from Newfoundland to Calgary.
Gert was born in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1920. She and Jack Gellately were
married for 68 years before his passing in 2009. In 1952 Jack and Gert moved to
Calgary where they raised their family. They spent several years in Redcliff and
Medicine Hat before returning to Calgary and Cochrane. Gert and Jack loved the
mountains and enjoyed many summers in Canmore.
Gert will be remembered for her sassy wit and as an excellent cook – in addition to
feeding her huge family, the door was always open for guests. She kept her sense of
humour right up until the end, joking that she was "sliding over home plate."
Special thanks to the staff of Bowview Manor andWentworth Manor, where she lived
her later years. Thanks also to Dr. Gittens and the nurses of Rockyview Hospital
Ward 74 for their outstanding care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre via the
