Altman, Babette Ruth
Babette Ruth Altman 4/29/1935 - 5/10/2016 Babette Ruth Altman, born Babette Ruth Wittenberg, age 81, passed away on May 10, 2016, in the presence of her family. Babette was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., to Regina Goldstone Wittenberg and Harold Wittenberg, and attended The Rhode Island School of Design where she majored in textile design, graduating in 1956. Following graduation Babette had an illustrious career as a textile designer during which time she was seen as a top designer achieving the highest status in the field. She was Vice president of Triple Exposure for several years, and was a Member of Textile Stylist Guild, before she retired in 1983. Babette was married to Laurence Altman from 1958-1972 and together they had two daughters, Phoebe Susan and Hayley. Babette followed her youngest daughter to California in 1996 where she resided at Sun City Community in Roseville until she passed away. Babette is survived by her two daughters, and five grandchildren. Babette will be remembered for her way with numbers, which served her well in her favorite game (bridge), for her avid reading and love of books, her dry humor which always got a laugh, and her strength of character which helped her function despite suffering a stroke at age 57, that left her disabled. She was a true advocate for the disabled, even starting the "Can Do" club at Sun City presiding as the Founder and President for several years. We would like to thank all those who showed her kindness and friendship and surrounded her with the warmth of community. A memorial with family members will be held on Fire Island, where Babette owned a home and summered before leaving N.Y. Babette loved the ocean and walking the beach to find sea glass, and she will be set to rest on this idyllic place.
