Barbara Marie "Bama" Maddox(1934 - 2013)

Barbara Marie "Bama" Maddox
1934 - 2013

Early morning, October 11, 2013, Barbara passed away peacefully with her daughter at her side. Barb's sudden illness and unexpected departure left those who knew and loved her saddened and heartbroken.
Born November 28, 1934, in Orchard, Nebraska, to Lawrence and Marie Mikkelson, she was the youngest of six children. Barb moved to Sacramento, Calif., in 1947, where she graduated from CK McClatchy High School in June 1952. On November 23, 1957, she married Richard Maddox, the love of her life, and raised three children. After Richard (Ace) passed away, Barb was lucky enough to find a second love of her life in Gerry Henley, a cherished family friend for over 52 years, who became a companion to her from 1980 until his passing in 2006.
Barb moved to Auburn in 1970 with Richard, where they owned Scotts Corner, a little country store, and built Rattlesnake Marine. After his passing, she began working for the Auburn School District (Lincoln Way and Skyridge Elementary Schools) and then later transferred to the district office, where she retired after 25 years. Out of all the places in the world, Barb loved Auburn the most. It was her community. Auburn was home for her.
Barb's greatest passion was her children, grandchildren and their friends. She was always delighted when anyone would come for a visit. She loved to scrapbook with her granddaughter, Becca, and has left a legacy of many memorable books for her loved ones to treasure. She enjoyed collecting stamps and coins and derived a great deal of pleasure from reading books and gardening. Barb will also be fondly remembered for her large Thanksgiving dinners and Easter money hanging from the backyard trees. She would pull out all the stops for these events to have the family together.
In her last days, Bama, as she was known to her grandchildren, was able to share her love for her great-granddaughter, Kate Rogers, and to finally meet her newest great-granddaughter, Paige Rogers.
Barb is survived by her daughters, Teri Freeman and Tami Horwath (Frank); son, Richard (Tim) Maddox (Laura Tock); grandchildren: Rebecca Rogers (Justin), Tucker and Hunter Horwath; and brother, Mike Mikkelson (Rosa). Also survived by her "second family" and their children: George Henley (Jan), Cindy Geremia, Gerri Shaw (Ron), Fred Henley (Cindra); and her many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to her niece, Sharon Kuhlemier, who was a close confidante and friend over the years.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, November 23, 2013, at 1 p.m., at the Pioneer United Methodist Church, 1338 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA. A reception will immediately follow at Max's Restaurant, 110 Grass Valley Hwy, Auburn, Calif.
We would like to extend an invitation to all the family, friends, and those who cared about Barb to join us in celebrating this wonderful woman who graced our lives. Special thanks to all the doctors and nurses at Kaiser Roseville. Please sign the online guestbook at www.chapelofthehills-auburn.com
