Bruce E. Norton
Bruce E. Norton
1926 - 2013
Bruce Norton, longtime companion of Norma Harris, passed away peacefully in his sleep early New Year's morning, following a brief illness.
Bruce was a longtime resident of Auburn and formerly Loomis, where he retired as an engineer from Aerojet Strategic Propulsion Corp.
Bruce was predeceased by his wife, Beverly Gray Norton, in 1976, and is survived by his sister, Diane Norton; son, Paul (Grinnell); daughter, Vicky Harrison (Charles); granddaughters: Ariel, Sierra, Rachel, Kelsey, and Deja; grandson, Ashlin; and great-granddaughter, Jasmine. Bruce is also survived by his dear companion of 36 years, Norma Harris, and her children: Joanne Garland, Kathleen Harris, Marilee Gordon, and Kent Harris.
Born Bruce Ellis Norton on August 29, 1926, to John and Maxine Amster Norton in Chicago, his family ultimately settled in California, where Bruce's career at U.S. Rubber led to his engineering position at Aerojet, from which he retired in 1988.
Bruce spent many years as a horse show judge and breeder of Morgan horses. He co-founded the Sacramento Valley Morgan Horse Club and was its Charter President. Bruce was a lifelong bowler and golfed for many years with his friend Mike Spinosi. An active pilot with his own Piper Archer, Bruce flew for many years. He was a member of Auburn Elks, was active in the Auburn Branch of the Italian Catholic Federation and Roseville lodge of Sons of Italy, all the while serving as president of Forest Gold Homeowners Association. Bruce and Norma led a very active social life in the Auburn area, attending many community events through the Chamber of Commerce, Auburn Community Cancer Endowment Foundation, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where they tore up the floor dancing many an evening. They actually met while dancing at a mutual friend's wedding.
Bruce will be remembered by many as the consumate gentleman and a good friend to all he knew. No matter what the scenario, Bruce never missed his morning crossword puzzles in the Auburn Journal and completed them in record time. Retired local veterinarian Virgil Traynor, who knew Bruce since 1963, referred to Bruce as "a truly fine man."
An active Catholic, Bruce will be remembered at a funeral mass on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11:30 am, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Auburn (where Bruce was baptized in 2006), with Father Ronan Brennan officiating. There will be a reception immediately following for family and friends.
