John B. Kessler
12/3/1931 - 3/13/2013
John was born and raised in the Arlington District of Berkeley, California. He attended UC Berkeley and graduated with a BA in business in 1954. He served his country during the Korean War
and was honorably discharged from the Navy as a LTJG on June 14, 1956 . He married Frances 'Pat' Phillips in Yosemite on September 5, 1956. They moved to Orinda in 1958, and raised their family there. Pat and John retired to Auburn in 2000.
John is survived by his wife, Pat Kessler and their three children: Ellie, Bill and Steve and their spouses: Kevin, Sue and Pam. John has six grandchildren: Erin, Dana, Kyle, Blake, Rindi and Cole. He loved the grandchildren and was so proud of them.
John's last train ride was on his 80th birthday as an Engineer on a 1912 SHAY Steam Engine belonging to The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad. He had a life-long love of trains - both real and model. Many family vacations included train excursions. He was a member of the Bay Area and Sacramento Garden Railway Society. John was a docent at the California Railway Museum in Sacramento. John was always a city boy, preferring hotels over camping, however, his adventuresome spirit included a six day Colorado River river-raft trip, numerous camping trips to Yosemite Valley and camping along the Russian River on the North Coast of California with his family. Pat and John were fortunate enough to travel throughout the world during their more than 56 years of marriage.
There will not be any services at this time but a celebration of his life this summer.
