Robert Carl Cooley, son of Jesse and Sally Cooley, was born on April 13, 1935, in Williams, Ariz. Brother Kenneth was born in 1939. Education was encouraged by his parents and Bob fulfilled their ideals. He attended four elementary schools in Arizona, Missouri and California. Roseville High School, Sierra College and Sac State completed his education. He served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. Through mutual friends, he met Penny Scully from South San Francisco and they were married August 2, 1958. They celebrated 54 years together. In 1951 while in high school, Bob began working for Roseville City School District as a night custodian at Woodbridge Elementary. After graduating from college, he returned to Roseville as a teacher. His career for RCSD spanned from 1960-1995. He co-founded the Pacific Environmental Education Center at Fort Bragg, Calif., and developed a mentor program for teachers. In 1974, he was named Placer County Teacher of the Year and State of Calif. Teacher of the Year runner up. His highest honor occurred in 2000, when his namesake, Robert C. Cooley Middle School opened. Bob loved his family and friends, fellow teachers, students, music, traveling, nature, the outdoors, science and being Santa Claus. His was an avid Giants and 49er fan. Bob loved being with his students; he spent many years backpacking, exploring ocean tide pools, supporting their athletic teams, and enjoying music functions with them. His involvement in the city of Roseville was profound--serving as a board member on the Performing Arts of Roseville, serving on the Roseville City Arts Commission and actively involved with Roseville High School Alumni Association. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life. For many years, Bob and Penny attended First Baptist Church of Roseville. For 16 years, they attended the Community Covenant Church in Rocklin. At the time of his death, he was serving as Head Elder. A born leader with a servants heart, Bob was loved by all who knew him. He died on February 27, 2013, from a stroke.
He is survived by his mother Sally, wife Penny, brother Kenneth (Carole), daughter Laura (Sami) Azzam, foster daughter Traci (Doug) Smith, grandchildren Cassandra (Peter) Kimmery, Kyle (Alexandria) Azzam, Wade Sauer, Jordan (Maria) Sauer, great-granddaughter Kaylee Kimmery, nephew Chad (Laura) Cooley, niece Colette (Jeff) Lemon, grandnieces Emma Grace and Jackson B. Cooley, and grandnephew, Preston Taylor.
Services will be held at Destiny Christian Church, 6900 Destiny Dr., Rocklin, Calif., on March 16 at 11 a.m.
