Elma Powell Oatis

Elma Powell Oatis (Nini) was born on March 28, 1936 in the Lettermen Army Hospital in San Francisco. At age three months she traveled through the Panama Canal to Watertown, Mass. Being the daughter of a career Army Officer she lived in multiple Army Bases on the East Coast. She graduated from Montomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md., in 1959 majoring in Childhood Education.
Elma first taught in the Baltimore, Md., city school system for five years. In her 38 years of teaching she taught throughout the country and also Japan. She retired in 1997 as principal of Saint John's Christian School in Roseville, Calif.
Elma enjoyed skiing, golf, travel and playing the guitar.
Elma was preceded in death by her parents, Col. and Mrs. G.F. Powell of Sacramento and son Wayne Francis Oatis. She leaves her husband of 54 years, Dr. George W. Oatis, Jr., of Roseville, daughter Diana Jean Winans of Orangevale, son George W. Oatis III, of Concord, daughter-in-law, Cindy Oatis of Huntington Beach, and brother Dr. G.E. Powell of Vancouver B.C. Canada. She will be missed by her nine grandchildren and many friends.
Elma will be buried near her son in Pacific View Memorial park in Corona del Mar., Calif. A celebration of her life will be at Valley Springs Presbyterian Church, 2401 Olympus Dr., Roseville on June 14, 2013 at 3 p.m.
