Ethel Joyce Peterson Knapp
8/6/1921 - 4/20/2013
Former Resident of Fremont,
Stockton and Folsom

Ethel Knapp, creative and energetic, a telephone operator in World War II, a master of any print shop in her 50's, a quilter, avid in Bible study, a loving and supportive mother to six daughters, grandmother of twelve and great-grandmother of fifteen, entered into rest in the late afternoon of April 20, 2013 after surviving a stroke in 2012. Ethel was one of seven children born to Selma and Ernest Peterson of Illinois, children of Swedish immigrants who arrived in Chicago in 1879.
Ethel is survived by her younger brother, Robert Peterson of Wisconsin and six daughters, Joyce Nelson, Carolyn Davidson, Linda Murdock, AliceMarie Haney, Mary Messchaert, Betty Rowley.
Ethel is preceded in death by her husband Roy in 2002.
Ethel, born in Waukegan, Illinois, was a World War II bride who worked and cared for her mother-in-law while her beloved Roy was stationed in the Pacific aboard a U.S. Navy ship. In 1961, she adventured to California with Roy and their six daughters.
Returning to the workplace in her early 40's, Ethel's artistic eye, unceasing curiosity and problem-solving capabilities led her to gain skills in print layout, photography, and machinery. She challenged the stereotypical image of a printer with her feminine five-foot-one frame. Ethel claimed having four brothers and regularly walking across rooms on her hands in her youth helped prepare her to deal with the physical demands of her job and the discrimination she encountered being "a woman in a man's profession". Her feisty determination set an example of strength and courage for her daughters who became teachers, entrepreneurs, and artists. Her grandchildren already show evidence of her intelligence and strength. All who knew and loved her will miss Ethel's beautiful smile, innate wisdom and practical teachings.
