3/27/1943 - 3/11/2013
Meadow Vista resident, Kelly Bane, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2013 while in the hospital following a stroke.
Kelly was born in Burbank, Calif., on March 27, 1943, but he remembered well his youth spent on the ocean front in Newport Beach where his parents bought a house and he learned to fish, swim, surf, and work. He graduated from Newport Harbor High School in 1961, attended Orange Coast College and graduated from Chico State. He played basketball while in college and reminisced about these experiences throughout his life.
Kelly was a sales representative for 25 years with Josten's school/scholastic division where he made many lifelong friends. Upon retirement from Josten's he decided to restore antique and classic wooden boats, so he went to work at Sierra Boat Company at North Lake Tahoe where he learned the trade. He joined and became actively involved with Tahoe Yacht Club and Antique & Classic Boat Society. One award of which he was most proud was a first place for his restored 1955 Chris Craft Capri at the '97 boat show. Another hobby was his love of Volkswagens; he recently bought a 1973 "Thing" and restored it to pristine condition.
He was an avid traveler visiting much of the Western United States including Hawaii and Alaska, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Canada. Kelly loved RV travel; one autumn he drove to the Northern reaches of Manitoba to see the polar bears. He was always a bird watcher and enjoyed being able to identify each. On his last vacation on Maui he experienced the excitement of watching humpback whales breaching and tail slapping, counting each sighting.
Kelly is survived by his son, Logan; daughter-in-law, Nanci; and grandson, Moses, who live in Spokane; sister, Sam Juergens, from Huntington Beach; and wife, Jane.
