Sarah Mae Groomes

Sarah Mae Groomes of Auburn, formally of El Dorado County, passed away on April 18, 2014, at the age of 92. Sarah was born in Texas on September 19, 1921. After completing third grade, she left school to pick cotton, and later enjoyed working in a candy factory in Tyler, Texas. After meeting her first husband she relocated to California in the 1940's. There she owned and operated Sarah's Cafe for twelve years.
Sarah enjoyed cooking, recipe collecting, dominos, playing cards, fishing, and traveling. She would often be found singing "Mairzy Doats" while cooking her favorite dishes. She was married twice and was preceded in death by her first husband Albert L. McCormick, second husband Paul M. Groomes, and her son Albert Lee McCormick. Sarah is survived by: her two other children Sheldon Ray McCormick and Linda Mae Truluck, four grandchildren Daniel and James McCormick, Davin Truluck, and Christy Ullom, and six great-grandchildren Davin, Wyatt, Savannah, Connal, Mickey, and Jimmy.
Sarah will be remembered for her wonderful smile, being frankly honest, and her famous Lemon Meringue pie. Graveside services will be held at the New Auburn Cemetery on April 23, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Flowers may be sent to Lassila Funeral Chapel on Grass Valley Highway in Auburn.
