Clifford B. Hendricks, a Civil Engineer and Master Mason, passed away June 14, 2013 at the age of 83 in Auburn, Calif., following a long illness.
Cliff was born in Mahaska County, Iowa on January 20, 1930 to Curtis and Sina Hendricks. At the age of 13, the family move to Long Beach, Calif., where he completed his high school education. At the age of 20, he was drafted and served with distinction in Korea with the 24th Infantry, earning a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He then attended Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo on the G.I. Bill and earned a BA in Agricultural Engineering. While at SLO, he took a position with California Division of Highways in District 5.
During this time he met Donna Nelson and they married on March 18, 1956. Shortly after graduation, Cliff took a position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Sacramento. They remained in Northern California to work and raise their children.
He was raised in Provident Lodge #609 in 1967. He quickly became Master of the Lodge, in 1970, and had remained active in Masonry and the Shrine until shortly before his passing. He was a member of: Provident Lodge #609 F & AM (Past Master), Oddfellows (IOOF) Capital Lodge #87, Nevada Lodge #13 F & AM (Nevada City), Sacramento Scottish Rite Body, Auburn York Rite Body, Ben Ali Temple Shrine (Sacramento), Ben Ali Oriental Band, Ben Ali Past Masters Unit, Ben Ali Placer Co. Shrine Club, Golden Claymore Clan of the Royal Order of Scotland, Auburn High 12 Club, Golden Hills Scottish Rite Club (Nevada City), Aahmes Arabians Oriental Band (Santa Rosa), receipiant of the Hiram Award in 1991, NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees), E. Clampus Vitus - Lord Sholto Douglas (Auburn), Al-Anon, and a docent at the Towe Ford Museum in Sacramento. Clifford also enjoyed gardening, as his children will attest. Lastly, and most importantly, he was a lifetime member of the "Vista Avenue Gang."
Cliff is survived by Donna, his wife of 57 years; his children: Carson, Elliott (Linda), Sandra, and Patricia Coyle (David); five grandchildren: Lisa, Dennis, Tara, Brandi, and Eric; and six great-grandsons: Anthony, Ethan, Rhett, Aiden, Kyler, and Coby. He is also survived by many, many friends and colleagues. We will all miss him greatly.
Funeral services will be held this Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at Lassila Funeral Chapel at 551 Grass Valley Highway, Auburn, Calif. The services will be preceded by a viewing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Cliff requested that donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento (www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org) The family would like to thank the staffs at Auburn Ravine Terrace and the Senior Care Villa of Loomis for the wonderful care they gave to Cliff.
