Sylvia Chin-Pi Lu, a mathematics professor and courageous woman far ahead of her time, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2014 at Villa Serena in San Jose, CA, after a years-long struggle with lung cancer. She was 86 years old. A Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado, Denver, Sylvia was passionate about mathematics and continued publishing papers into her 80s. Born in Taiwan to Liu Mo-Yung and Liu Chen Mei, she migrated alone in 1957 to the United States to enroll at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon). There she endured great homesickness, language barriers, and separation from her daughters ages 5 and 4 to graduate with a Masters in Mathematics and later a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Pennsylvania State University. She was reunited with her family at Christmas 1962, when she was an assistant professor at the University of Illinois. Subsequently a professor of mathematics at the University of Colorado, Denver for 23 years, Sylvia published widely and spoke internationally, including as an invited speaker to the 1990 International Conference of Mathematics (ICM) in Kyoto, Japan. A longtime resident of Lakewood, CO, Sylvia was an opera lover, doll collector, and accomplished seamstress who loved botanical gardens and parks. Beloved wife of 63 years of Paul Hai-Hsing Lu, mother of Emily Lu (Wingo) Huang and Flora Lu (Tung-Sheng) Kuan, grandmother of Felice (Graeme Smith), Pauline (Dean Hu), Aaron, and Allan. Loving sister of Liao Whey-Lu (predeceased), Ho-Shang Wong, Wen-Shong Liu, Min-Shong Liu, Chen-Wan (Ike) Yen, and Fui-Ming Wang. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 27 at 1:00 PM at Oak Hill Funeral Home's Chapel of the Roses, 300 Curtner Ave, San Jose CA 95125.
