Rhode Island, South Kings town - HATTIE LOUISE FRANKLIN GILTON passed away on April 22, 2013 after a long illness. Born in Lynn, MA to the late John W. Franklin and A. Louise Perry Franklin, she graduated from Lynn English High School and attended the Copley Secretarial Institute in Boston. Mrs. Gilton worked for the federal government for 30 years where she retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1987. After retirement, Mrs. Gilton worked for Penn State University Library for four years. She also served as a VISTA volunteer at the Memphis (TN) Heritage and Memphis Area Community Reinvestment Organization (MACRO). Mrs. Gilton did extensive community work and loved music, especially spirituals and classical music. She served as the pianist for the children’s choir at several churches. Mrs. Gilton enjoyed traveling and made trips to Canada, Hawaii, Central America and Bermuda. Mrs. Gilton also drove long distances over the years to enjoy various parts of the u.S. She loved people and was always happy to entertain family and friends. Mrs. Gilton is survived by her children, Charles Gilton of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, Donna L. Gilton of South Kingstown, Rhode Island and David Gilton of Reno, Nevada, as well as her brother, Benjamin R. Franklin of Lynn, MA, and her sister, Sarah Franklin Swan of Toledo, Ohio.
