Lou "Billie" W. Baker Bartlett, TN Lou Baker, 94, went home to be with the Lord, August 17, 2016 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born February 19, 1922 in Clifton, TN to Mary Maggie Thompson Prine and Edd Guy Prine. She is predeceased by her parents, husband, Wm. McDowell Baker, sister, Ollie Prine Shelton, Hazel Prine and Robert Guy Prine. Billie grew up in Wayne County, TN but moved to Memphis to pursue opportunity. She attended beauty school and was part of the original Gould's salon as a premier hair stylist trained in New York. During WW II, she worked in the Fisher airplane plant as a 'Rosie the Riveter' wearing jumpsuits her mother has sewn as women did not wear pants at the time. It was there she met the love of her life, Dal Baker. Married for 58 years by Dr. Robert G. Lee at Bellevue, they enjoyed their large azalea garden of over 1200 varietals which was visited quite often by the Commercial Appeal and Memphis Press Scimitar. Many of her lifelong friends and her passions were centered around her business of over 40 years, Mel-Ba Beauty Salon and being "Grandma" and "Memaw" to her loving grandchildren. Dal and Billie are survived by two children, Patti Anne Rowell and Barbara Baker Pepper, 5 grandchildren, Rachel (Rowell) Roth of Atlanta, GA, Ruth (Rowell) Riley of Bartlett, TN, W. Garrett Pepper of Tampa, FL, Kellye (Pepper) Wilcheck of Bozeman, MT, Laura Grace Pepper of Memphis and 7 great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their deep thanks to Helen Belmont who has been her friend and caregiver for over 10 years. We would also like to thank Crossroads Hospice for their loving and kind care during her last year. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 21st at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Road starting at 1:30 pm with services and burial to follow at 3:00 pm. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
