EUGENE POWELL, 88, of Memphis departed this life on June 21, 2013. He was born April 27, 1925, in Fairfield, AL. He served in the US Navy during World War II and received an Honorable Discharge. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miles College, in Birmingham, AL and a Master of Science in Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. He served as a Teacher and Administrator at Melrose High School for 34 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Hester Richardson Powell; daughter, Angela R. Powell of Colesville, MD; surrogate daughter, CAPT Elise S.Y. Young of Washington, D.C.; sister, Mary Powell Kello of Brighton, AL; 3 grandchildren; countless friends and extended family. Contributions can be made to the Eugene Powell Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 5353, Rockville, MD, 20848. The fund will support High School Seniors in pursuit of higher education. The body will lie in state on Friday, June 28 from 5 - 7 p.m. at The Orange Mound Community Center and on Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 767 Walker Avenue.
