Ernest Morrison Lape, 98, of Concord passed away Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014. For 71 years he was the loving husband of Mildred Hadley Lape, who preceded him in death in 2012. Mr. Lape was born in Boston, Mass., on Sept. 8, 1916. He graduated from Lynn English High School and Tufts University, where he competed in track and received his degree in chemical engineering. For 43 years he worked as a metallurgist for General Electric in Lynn until he retired in 1981, receiving national recognition for his contributions to national defense for the development of aircraft engines. Mr. Lape was devoted to his family, traveling sometimes long distances to attend grandchildren's graduations, concerts and performances. Skilled in calligraphy, many have received diplomas, certificates and invitations written in his own unique style. His hobbies of cabinetry and woodworking resulted in prized doll houses, clocks, furniture and buildings. Ernest and Mildred spent more than 50 summers at their beloved coastal summer home in Beals, Maine, with their family and friends. He is survived by his brother, Philip B. Lape and wife Ann of Placido, Fla.; his children, John Lape and wife MaryAnn of North Reading, Mass., Judith DeLong and husband Gary of Longmeadow, Mass., and Connie Bone and husband Robert of Lebanon, Tenn.; grandchildren, Marcy Sanford and husband William, Catherine Choomack and husband John West, Joshua DeLong and wife Maureen, Nancy Lape and husband Patricio Giecco, and Ann Choomack and husband Ralph Sciano; and great-grandchildren Julia, Jack, Emma, Charlotte, Isabelle and Luca. A service of celebration of the life of Ernest Lape will be held Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, at 3 p.m., at the New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene, 33 Staniels Road, Loudon. A reception will follow the service. Burial will be in the spring at the convenience of the family.
