Catherine A. Currier Riel(1924 - 2013)

Henniker – Catherine A. "Rene" Currier Riel, 89, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at the Merrimack County Nursing Home with her extended family by her side following a period of declining health.
She was born in New York City, N.Y., on Oct. 25, 1924, the daughter of Cyril B. and Barbara L. (King) Dumas.
She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Cyril Dumas and Robert Dumas, and sisters, Dorothy Grant and Barbara Connolly, her first husband George D. Currier of Dedham, Mass., and her second husband Leon J. Riel of Henniker.
She is survived by her sisters, Ann Wasilewski of Birmingham, Ala., and Mary Blyzes of Beaufort, S.C.; by her four children, David P. Currier and wife, Teresa, of Henniker, Rene Murray and her husband, Robert, of Malden, Mass., Louise Bell of Dedham, Mass., and Richard Currier of Norwood, Mass.; a niece and nephew she raised from childhood, Jackie Connolly of Middleboro, Mass., and James M. Grant of Lowell, Mass.; nine grandchildren, Robert Murray, Kenneth Murray, Rene Marie Barchard, Kim Cody, Christine Smith, John Bell, Kristen Geiger, Jennifer Bell, Paul Currier, Joseph and Nicholas Memmo and Rachel O'Donnell; and eight great-grandchildren, Christopher Barchard, Megan Barchard, Johnathan Smith, Melissa Smith, Brendan Smith, Mark Cody, Brian Cody and Kyleigh Bell; step children Norman L. Riel of Tamworth, Linda L. King of Barnstead, Leon J. Riel of Salisbury, Bonnie Hebert of Tamworth, and Tammy Beaudoin of Epsom; nine step grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Family was a very important part of her life. Over the years, Rene was active as a Den Mother & Girl Scout leader, in Avon, and the Henniker Lions Club, where she was a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest award in Lions. Always helping others, she had a heart of gold. She was a communicant at St. Theresa Parish in Henniker.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 19 Hall Ave., Henniker.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa Church, 158 Old West Hopkinton Road, Henniker, followed by a celebration of her life reception in the church hall.
Burial will be in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in her name to The College of St. Mary Magdalen Scholarship Fund, 511 Kearsarge Mountain Road, Warner 03278.
