PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Donald Lindsay Nutter, 91, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, in Panama City, Fla. after an extended illness. He was born on Feb. 7, 1921, in Pittsfield to Anna Shreve Nutter and Franklin Harris Nutter.
He spent his youth in Concord, graduating from Concord High School in 1939. He served his country honorably during World War II
in his four years in the U.S. Army
and the U.S. Army Air Force. He graduated from Air Force Cadet School at Maxwell AFB in Alabama. He also was assigned to the then Tyndall Field in Panama City, training in gunnery school. This assignment led to his meeting his future bride, Mittie Straus, a junior hostess at the USO. Two years later they were married, on June 8, 1947, at the United Methodist Church in Panama City.
Don lived in Pittsfield, Lebanon, Berlin, Concord, Canterbury and Portland, Maine. He was employed by the Boston and Maine Railroad for 38 years prior to retiring to Panama City.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mittie Straus Nutter; his children, Katherine A. Lavigne (Harold) of Concord and Walter H. Nutter (Wendy) of Oakham, Mass.; grandchildren, Harold Lavigne II (Katherine M.) of Allenstown, Alex Lindsay Nutter of Holyoke, Mass., Caitlin N. Nutter of New York City, Anna M. Maguire of Dover, Vt.; and step-granddaughter, Michelle Jettie (Maurice) of Fairfield, Vt. He also leaves his great-grandchildren, Keith and Lindsay Lavigne of Allenstown and Wyatt Donald Maguire of Dover, Vt.; step-great-grandchildren, Derek, Nicholas and Carrie Jette of Fairfield, Vt. He leaves his sister, Anne Namon of Miami; his brother Carlton Nutter of The Villages, Fla.
He was predeceased by his parents of Concord and his brother Keith H. Nutter of Meredith.
A memorial service will be held Friday, July 26, at 2 p.m. at the NH State Veteran's Cemetery in Boscawen. The Rev. Carol Asher will officiate.
