Donald R. Melendy, age 81, a resident of The Birches at Concord died Sunday, May 19, 2013, after a long courageous battle with failing health. He was formerly a long term resident of Charlestown.
Don was one of nine children born to the late Don L. and Phila (Hazen) Melendy. He was predeceased by two brothers, Rob and Roger Melendy; and, is survived by six siblings, Margaret O'Connell, Marion Wright, Allen Melendy, Carl Melendy, Madalyn Sprague and Martha Scherer.
Don is predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years. He is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Susan and "Gus" Pirnie of Loudon and Patricia and Andy Singer of Charlotte, N.C.; one son, Donald W. Melendy of Texas. He has many grandchildren, that include Jared Curdie of Baton Rouge La., Jessica Woodward of Baltimore, Md. and Donald J. Melendy. He has two great-grandchildren in Lousiana.
Don is a decorated U.S. Army
veteran. He received the Bronze Star
Medal for outstanding meritorious service in ground operations against a hostile force while deployed in Vietnam in 1968-1969. When deployed with the 42nd Transportation Battalion 1969-1971, he directed the movement and resupply activities for two civil disturbance control brigades. During his military career he was a Transportation Senior Sargent, Mechanic Maintenance Supervisor, a Senior Heavy Vehicle Operator and a Staging Technician with the Concert Band and Soldiers' Chorus of the Army Field Band. He retired from military life in 1986; but, did not choose to sit back and relax. He chose to become a trucker for several years and drove an "18 wheeler" along the east coast.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The Waters Funeral Home, 50 S. Main St., Concord.
A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of the NH State Veterans' Cemetery in Boscawen.
