CANDIA - Dorothy Ann (Foster) Purington, 86, of Candia, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013.
She was born on Jan. 5, 1927, in Berkeley, Calif., the daughter of Goodwin LeBaron and Grace (Page) Foster. Dott and her parents and sister moved from Berkeley, Calif. to Chicago and then finally New York City. During the summer the family visited the Page relatives in Candia.
She attended the prestigious Northfield School for Girls in Northfield, Mass. from 1940 - 1945. These were some of the happiest years of her life; all about music and academics - well mostly music: violin and Acapella chorus. She began playing violin at age 4 ½ and enjoyed playing with the family, her mother on the piano and father on the cello. She was also a life-long opera fan and enjoyed attending the Metropolitan Opera. Dott attended Barnard College for her undergraduate degree. She then moved back to Candia where she met and later married her husband, Kenneth Purington. In 1956 Dott moved with her family from Candia to Tempe, where she finished her Master's Degree in Education at Arizona State University
. The family returned to the East coast and lived in Northfield for over 20 years. Dott became a teacher and, later, Media Specialist, at the Gilford Elementary School. She retired and moved back to Candia in 1983.
Dott was an avid reader and loved history. She belonged to the Candia Historical Society and supported the Smyth Public Library. With her husband, she enjoyed mapping and inventorying cemeteries in Candia and the surrounding towns. She was a long-time trustee of the Fitts Museum where she enjoyed investigating the history of the incoming inventory and donations; as well as giving tours of the Museum. She is the author of A Candia Collection, a compilation of pictures, articles and original material, written in 2005, with all proceeds donated to the Candia Historical Society. She was an avid quilter and knitter and belonged to the Quilters Guild in Candia.
Dott is predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, Kenneth A. Purington.
She will be greatly missed by her two sons, Kenneth A. Purington II of Candia, and Eric and his wife, Lenore Purington, of Cliff, N.M.; her daughter, Tracy (Purington) Bascom and her husband, William, of Candia and Belmont; her two grandchildren, Rachel Bascom of Seattle and Alexander Bascom of Tempe, Ariz.; her cousin, Priscilla Page of Montpelier; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved black Lab "Charly".
Private services will be at her family's convenience.
