WASHINGTON - Franclyn B. "Bud" Garvin Jr., 91, died at the NH Veteran's Home in Tilton Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, following a period of declining health. Mr. Garvin had previously lived in Portsmouth and Washington, and Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.
He was born in Greenland, on Dec. 17, 1921, to Franclyn B. and Blanche (Cooper) Garvin. He graduated from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1940, and went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an apprentice machinist. He was called to service during World War II
with the United States Army
in April of 1943 and served as a Motor Transportation Officer in Austria, During the Battle of Buldge. Mr. Garvin was Honorably Discharged from the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in August of 1946, and returned to work at the shipyard. He retired from the shipyard in March of 1977 as an Equipment Specialist in the Planning & Estimating Department.
One of Mr. Garvin's passions was the game of golf, which he played into his 80's. He was a longtime member at the Portsmouth Country Club, and enjoyed playing several years in Florida following his retirement.
Mr. Garvin recently received a pin for his many years as a member of the Portsmouth Elks Lodge
Post 97, and he was also a member of the Masons, most recently with Harmony Lodge #38, in Hillsboro, American Legion Post # 59 Hillsboro, and Portsmouth North Church. He was also an active member in Portsmouth High School's Class of 1940 Re-union Committee, and was able to attend it's 70th re-union in 2010.
Mr. Garvin is survived by three children, daughter, Jean Knowlton of Rockport, Mass., son, James Garvin of Washington, and son, Jon Garvin, of Rollinsford; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m. at the NH Veteran's Cemetery in Boscawen.
