BOW - George P. Bart died Monday, January 7, 2013 at Concord Regional VNA Hospice House following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Lawrence, Mass., the son of Peter and Angeline Bart, was raised in Concord and later moved to Bow with wife Mary and family. He attended Concord High School, New Hampton School, and MIT and served honorably in the U.S. Navy
He owned and operated, with his brother, the Granite State Candy Shoppe in Concord until his retirement in 1995. George was well known around town as "the candy man" for making famous chocolates and candies from recipes handed down from his father who founded the company in 1927. The store was profiled in local and national newspapers, magazines, and television programs.
George was an avid chess player rising to the level of New Hampshire Champion for four consecutive years and served as leader and mentor to the Concord chess community. He liked watching New England professional sports, loved Jazz music, and enjoyed the companionship of his cats, Tucker and Max.
George was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Fournier) Bart; their sons Matthew of Wyoming and Andrew of California; and daughter Melissa Kiah and her husband Richard of Dunbarton. He especially loved his three grandchildren Nicholas, Emily, and Nathan Kiah. He is also survived by brother Constantine; sisters Evanthia Lemonias and Mercene Vafiades; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and sister Mary Newell.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, January 10, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 11, at 9 a.m., at Christ the King Parish, St. John the Evangelist Church, 72 S. Main St., Concord. A reception will follow the Mass in the church activity center.
Burial at Blossom Hill Cemetery will follow the reception.
