Gerard R. LeTendre(1929 - 2013)

DOVER - Gerard R. LeTendre, resident at Langdon Place of Dover, pass away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at the age of 84.

He was born in Pembroke, on March 28, 1929, the son of Philip and Maria (Labbe) LeTendre.

After attending the Franco-American St. Jean-Baptiste elementary school in Allenstown, he graduated from Pembroke Academy in 1948.

Mr. LeTendre served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

He pursued his studies at Yale University where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1960 and a Master of Music degree the following year. He continued his studies at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France where he obtained a Master's degree in French in 1971.

For 32 years he was on the faculty at the Taft School in Watertown, Conn. where he taught Piano, French and German. He headed the Modern Language Department for 18 years. In 1991, he was given the College Board's "Advance Program Recognition Award for Outstanding Teacher's". In 1992, he was knighted "Chevalier des Palmes Academiques" by the French Government in recognition of his original songs in french about the life of his French-Canadian and Franco-American ancestors, songs he performed at various schools and universities, franco associations including Bayeux and in Sevres, France. Soon after retiring in Rye Beach, he created "Le Carole Francais de Rye Beach". He was known locally for his original arrangements of a vast repertory of songs. "Gerry", as he was called, lived part of the time in Paris, France where he maintained an apartment.

He leaves his sister, Ms. Carmen L. Miller of Milford; a nephew and two nieces.

Mr. LeTendre was predeceased by his sister, Jeannine LeTendre of Pembroke, on Oct. 3, 2004.

There will be no visiting hours.

Private services for family and friends will be held at a later date.
