Phyllis Sacks Cohen

MILFORD, Conn. - Phyllis Sacks Cohen, age 85 of Milford, formerly of Fairfield, Conn., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at her residence surrounded by her family.

Phyllis was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late Nettie (Alta) Binkovich Sacks and Max Sacks. At the age of eight, the family moved to New Milford, Conn. where she lived for many years and graduated from New Milford High School.

Phyllis and her husband and family spent most of their happily married life in Fairfield. For the past 23 years, Phyllis has spent her winters in Mexico, making Puerto Vallarta her second home. Phyllis attended the University of Connecticut and graduated from Springfield College with a BA degree in Human Resources. Phyllis loved teaching in Bridgeport for many years but loved teaching ESL at Central High School the most.

She was active in Travelers Insurance Company's drama group and the drama group at the Jewish Community Center. Phyllis was a life member of the Jewish Home for the Elderly, life member of Hadassah, Women's American ORT, School Volunteers in Bridgeport for 17 years and she was a generous donor to St. Jude. She and her family were members of Congregation Rodeph Sholom.

Phyllis was predeceased in 1992 by the love of her life, A. Malcolm Cohen.

Phyllis leaves her daughters, E J Cohen of Concord, Melanie Cohen Scheibenpflug and her husband, Jack, of Manchester, Conn. and Randi Cohen and her husband, William Coblenz, of Arlington, Va. In addition, Phyllis leaves her brother-in-law, Byron Bayles, of Long Island, N.Y., brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Abbe and Irene Cohen of Brookline, Mass., many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and special friends in Connecticut, across the country and in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Services will take place Thursday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. from The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road in Fairfield, Conn., with interment following at Hebrew Sick Benefit Association Cemetery on Black Rock Turnpike.

The family wishes to thank the fabulous staff at the Oncology Associates of Bridgeport, the wonderful and caring nurses and PCT's at Bridgeport Hospital's Tower 7 and a special thank you to her aide, Thando. Their warmth and affection will never be forgotten.
