EPSOM - Rena M. (Arsenault) McDonald, 88, a resident of the Epsom HealthCare Center, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Concord Hospital.
Born on March 8, 1925, in Portland, Maine, Rena was the daughter of Alyre and Marion (Gallant) Arsenault.
Rena was a registered nurse, receiving her nurses training and graduating as an Army nurse from the New England Hospital for Women & Children under the U.S. Armed Forces Cadet Nurse program during World War II
. She was very proud to have served her country in time of war and strove passionately to have all cadet nurses recognized with full veteran status by the federal government.
During her lifetime, she worked as an elder care and private duty nurse. She was a lively, talented lady with a great sense of humor. She loved music and could play the guitar, piano and spoons, as well as sing and triple yodel. At the Epsom HealthCare Center, she helped to organize a resident's "Jug Band" and was an avid cribbage player.
Rena was married to Raphael W. McDonald of Epsom for 63 years, who predeceased her.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Dennis and Salma McDonald of Eliot, Maine, Geraldyne McDonald of Newburyport, Mass., Brian and Verna McDonald of Hopedale, Mass., Scott McDonald of Bellingham, Mass., Neal McDonald of Concord and Michele McDonald of Selinsgrove, Pa.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her brothers, Avis Arsenault and Ralph Arsenault; and a sister, Cecilia Russell.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Allenstown. Following the service, a reception will be held in the adjoining Parish Hall. Urn burial will be held in the spring at McClary Cemetery in Epsom.
