W. David Longnecker, 67, of Old Turnpike Road, died unexpectedly while working in his yard on Wednesday, January 30, 2013. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 5, 1945, the son of Walter L. and Mary Jane (Laymon) Longnecker.
Dave spent his youth in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He earned his BA degree in history from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and a PhD in education from Northwestern University
. He had been the Assistant Dean of Students at Northwestern, owner of Kiltons of Manchester, and a teacher, counselor and administrator at New Hampton School and Spurwink School in Farmington. He moved to Salisbury in 1998 and served on the Merrimack Valley School Board for the last 12 years. Dave's passion for educating and helping at-risk students led him to be instrumental in the creation of the Merrimack Valley Learning Center and to serve on the boards of CSI Charter School and TEAMS Charter School.
"Pop" was devoted to his family, taking great joy in his role as a grandfather. Members of his family include his wife of 44 years, Seelye (Burr) Longnecker of Salisbury; a daughter and her husband, Molly and William Steiger of New York; a son and his wife, Jeff and Johanna Longnecker of Boston; five grandchildren, August and Ellis Steiger, Eve, George and Edward Longnecker; three siblings, Nancy West of Oak Park, Ill., Donald and his wife Jeralyn Longnecker of Birmingham, Mich., and Chatham, Mass., Linda and her husband, Stanley Thompson of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Palm Beach, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 6, at 1 p.m. at The First Baptist Church of New London. Burial will be in North Haven, Maine, at a later date.
