ALEXANDRIA – Robert C. Akerman, 88, of Healey Road, died, Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Speare Memorial Hospital. He was born in Alexandria and had lived most of his life there or in Groton. He was the son of Clyde and Fedora (Sanborn) Akerman. Bob was a proud veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corp. He returned from the service and set about farming on the family's property as well as plowing and mowing for area families. He was a talented carpenter, doing work and repairs at home and for others. He also did care taking at the AMC property on Mt. Cardigan.

Bob was involved in the community. He was a charter member of the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Alexandria and Groton Historical Societies, served as a selectman of Alexandria for 10 years, was a member of the Alexandria United Methodist Church, the VFW Post #1648 of Franklin and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Lake Region 11.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda (Hume) Akerman; three daughters, Martha Flanders of Alexandria; Sandra Hutchins and Lucy Johnson both of Groton; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; cousins as well as seven stepchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; and many step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Bernice (Blake) Akerman; daughter, Brenda Sousa; grandson, Robert Sousa; and brothers, Allen and Clayton Akerman.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, July 6, at 1 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Alexandria.
