Benjamin Arthur Macey, "Ben", passed away peacefully Friday, April 5, 2013 surrounded by four of his seven children and one granddaughter. He was born April 1, 1923 and had just celebrated his 90th birthday.

Ben was predeceased by his four older brothers, Stan, Rich, Harold and Bob Macey, as well as his first wife and mother of his children, Virginia Nelson Macey and second wife Phyllis Holden Macey, all from Concord. Ben was born and raised in Concord, graduating from Concord High school. He served in the Army Air Force in World War II. He attended and graduated from the University of New Hampshire. Ben received his Masters Degree in Education from Plymouth State Teachers College and later pursued his Doctorate Degree at Syracuse University.

Ben was a man who loved his family. He was a lifelong member of The Red Sox Nation and was passionate about education. Ben enjoyed 35 years as a public school principal in the states of New Hampshire, New York and Connecticut retiring while in Massachusetts. He felt strongly about the importance of cooperative collaboration between administrators, teachers, parents and the community in building successful schools and turning out successful students. One of Ben's favorite saying was, "We don't teach children what to think, but how to think for themselves." He opened the minds and touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. Ben will be missed by all of us.

Ben is survived by his large and loving family. His children, Gail Ackley of Tulsa, Okla., Diane Wright of Wichita, Kan., Lee Macey of Palm Springs, Calif. Holly Reeder of Newmarket, Ellen Fioretti of Henniker, Sara Macey of Canterbury and Laurie Williams of Wichita, Kan.; and step-daughter Robin Dole of Reston, Va. He has 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He also enjoyed his nieces and nephews who continued to be a part of his life.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Bennett's Funeral Home, 209 North Main Street, Concord. If anyone has a tribute to Ben it will be welcome at that time.
