Charles (Charlie) W. Carr died Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at his home at Havenwood Heritage Heights after a brief illness.

He was born September 22, 1923, in Jamaica, N.Y., and grew up in Agawam, Mass., the oldest of seven children. After Pearl Harbor he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served in the North Atlantic Theater. During college Charlie met and married Eleanor Adams and began their family of seven children. In 1953 he earned a graduate degree in Agricultural Science from the University of Massachusetts and worked in agricultural research for several years. In 1958 he began his lifetime career as a high school science teacher, most recently at Merrimack Valley High School in Penacook.

Eleanor died after 23 years of marriage; and Charlie met and eventually married Mary Whelton of Goffstown. Together they created a blended family with fourteen children. Charlie retired from teaching and became active in civic activities in Goffstown. In due course, he was honored by the designation of "Charlie Carr Day" by the Town in October 2009. After Mary died in 2007, Charlie moved to Havenwood in Concord in 2009 where he volunteered as a Compassionate Caregiver and participated in many community activities.

He is survived by sister Elaine Barton of Florida; brothers Ray of Massachusetts, and Russ of Arizona; his children: Judy Cloues and Richard of Stone Mountain Ga., William Carr and Sophia of Newalla, Okla., John Carr and Marcia Rasmussen of Contoocook, Allan Carr and Zaida Casey of Lyndeborough, Wayne Carr and Pauline of Summerfield, Fla., Lillianne Carr of Manchester, Andrea Felix of Ellenburg Depot, N.Y., Mary Ricker and Al of Goffstown, Brian Whelton and Kathy of Londonderry, Justin Whelton of Manchester, Claire Grosso of Colorodo Springs, Colo., Michael Whelton of Nashua, Paul Whelton and Karen of Danvers, Mass., Vincent Whelton of Tennessee; 28 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
