David Wilcox Obituary

DANBURY – David Neil Wilcox, 65, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011, at home, after a long illness.

He was born May 29, 1945, in Quincy, Mass., to F. Roland and Sarah Mae (MacKinnon) Wilcox. He graduated from East Bridgewater, Mass., High School in 1963 and attended UMass at Stockbridge.

Dave worked for T.L. Edward for many years. He and his wife, Linda, owned and operated Wilcox Tree Farm in Bridgewater, Mass. He moved to New Hampshire in 1995 and worked as a truck driver in the logging industry and still continued to farm in Andover.

Dave was a foster parent for many years and adopted four children. Active in 4-H, especially dairy cows, until he was 18, Dave talked often about his days in this group and how this was the happiest time of his life.

Members of his surviving family include his wife of 43 years, Linda (King) Wilcox of Danbury; children, Daniel Wilcox and wife, Audrey McKinney, of Bristol, Matthew and his wife, Julie Wilcox, of Allenstown, Meghan Wilcox and Brendan Kay of Sunapee and Toni Wilcox of Whitinsville, Mass.; 10 grandchildren, Todd, Ariel, Matty, Rachael, Dylan, A.J., Michael, Taylor, Shawn and Emily; his sister, Alice Norway of Middleboro, Mass.; many nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Corky.

Friends may call Saturday, March 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main St., New London.

Memorial contributions may be made to NH Foster and Adoptive Parent Association, P.O. Box 3572, Concord, 03302.

Linda and family, and Alice and family,

I was so deeply saddened to learn last night of David’s passing. While I can only barely imagine how all of you are feeling at this time, Brenda and I offer our most heartfelt condolences to each of you.

David and his early family - Alice, Uncle Rowlie, and Aunt Sadie – were a very significant influence on our family when we moved to Massachusetts many years ago. David was very influential for me because of our proximity in ages, and our various mutual interests in sports, fishing, music, and the usual teenage mischief. In our youth, we spent a lot of time together and it often felt as if we were brothers.

The early adventures I shared with David were among the most fun times of my life. I believe we toured most of southeastern Massachusetts together as soon as he got his driver’s license; and then we did it again each time he got a new vehicle, whether it was four-wheel or two-wheel. I remember his days in 4H and the various town fairs he attended. I still enjoy such fairs as a result of the fun I had nearly 50 years ago with him.

A great quality of David’s was his sense of humor; he was so witty and had such a wonderfully fun and unique way of looking at the world and the events that surrounded us. I laughed long and heartily whenever I was with him.

I learned much wisdom from David as we got older, and I still carry it with me today. He was a model for hard work and dedication, and most particularly for the devotion he had towards family; they were examples I took with me when I moved away to make my own mark in the world … hopefully, I measured up.

I will be thinking of you, and David, often in the days to come. The initial days after such a loss are heavy indeed, but time will temper the sense of loss and grief for all of you, and you will be able to look back to your time with David with much joy and fondness.

Again, please accept our deepest condolences.

With love,

Even though we may have only known him for 3 years, he made such an impact on our family. He demonstrated old fashioned hospitality and unselfishness. He also told some great memorable stories by our campfire. He has left a lasting impression and we cherish that time we spent together. He will be sorely missed on Juniper Meadow Road. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.
