NEWBURY - Ellen F. (Farrell) Croteau passed away peacefully at Woodlawn Care Center Monday, July 15, 2013, after a period of declining health. She was born in 1921 in West Somerville, Mass. The third of eight children in a large Irish family. She was the daughter of John and Mary Farrell. Ellen graduated from St. Clement's High School and subsequently worked in retail sales at Filenes in Boston. In 1942 she joined the U.S. Navy as a "Navy Wave", and served in Iowa, Maryland, and finally as a secretary in Washington, D.C.

Ellen married Walter Croteau in 1944, and moved from Somerville with their four children to Newbury in 1956. Ellen and Walter were together for 61 years until Walters's death in 2005. During her life in New Hampshire, Ellen was active in the PTA, enjoyed bowling, bingo, square dancing, winters in Interlachen, Fla., summers on Lake Sunapee, and spending time with family and her many dear friends.

She is survived by her children, Robert and his wife, Justine, of Andover, Mass., Bruce and his wife, Susan, of Hancock, Maine, Elaine Cady and her husband, James, of New London and Ellen Wassell and her husband, James, of Sunapee. She had seven grandchildren, Jeffery Brent, Brian Croteau, Sean Croteau, Erin Croteau Stefanek, Danielle Cady, Ryan Cady, and Jay Cady. She also had three great-grandchildren, Noah Brent, Ella Stefanek and Brynn Stefanek. She is survived by her siblings, Margaret Foley of Stoneham, Mass., Alice Parker and her husband, George, of Newbury and William Farrell of Medford, Mass.

She was pre-deceased by siblings, Mary Recinito, Agnes Farrell, John Farrell and James Farrell.

Interment will be held Thurday, July 25, at 10 a.m. at Lakeside Cemetery in Newbury. A memorial Mass and reception will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Joachims Church in Sunapee.
