PENACOOK – Francis N. LaClair, 92, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Havenwood Heritage Heights in Concord. He was born in Concord, the son of Nelson and Jane (O'Brien) LaClair in 1938. Francis grew up in Penacook, graduating from Penacook High School in 1938.
After high school, Francis had joined the Civilian Conservation Corps for six months before serving with the U.S. Air Force in World War II, where he was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, Okinawa, Japan and the Philippine Islands. After his return to New Hampshire, Francis went to work as a firefighter for the Concord Fire Department for 25 years, retiring in 1978 as a deputy chief of the department. After his retirement, he went to work for Allied Leather, where he worked until 1984 as a millwright. He then went to work for the Merrimack Valley School District for 17 years a bus driver in the transportation department.
He was a lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Penacook and was a great servant to his community helping to establish and acquire the Penacook Rescue Department. He traveled to Ohio to retrieve and drive back the department's first ambulance. He was an active member in American Legion Post 31 in Penacook, where he was very active in the scholarship program, both in the election process and presentation of awards.
Francis was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Jean (Mullens) LaClair, in 1968; his second wife, Arlene (Corriveau) LaClair, in 2008; his son Scott LaClair; four sisters, Ruth Roy, Marjorie Flynn, Evelyn Houle and Katherine Scholfield; and two brothers, Paul and Vernon LaClair.
He is survived by four daughters, Kathy Donovan of Connecticut, Gae Paradise of Concord, Tassee Collins of Concord and Kelly Morris of England; two stepdaughters, Sheila Kimball of Texas and Debra Ellis of Virginia; his sister Anette Cleveland of Penacook; two brothers, Robert LaClair of Boscawen and David LaClair of Penacook; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; ands many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home, 42 Washington St., Penacook 03303.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 9 Bonney St., Penacook 03303. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Penacook.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Penacook Rescue Squad, 1 Oak St., Boscawen 03303; or the American Legion Post 31 Scholarship Program, 11 Charles St., Penacook 03303.
