WEBSTER – Jane Marie Borek, 60, died at her home in Webster Sunday, April 13, 2014. Many people knew her simply as "Nurse Jane". She was a source of wisdom and witticism, as well as a pillar of strength to all those who knew her. She carried herself with a quiet air of dignity that made others feel at peace in her presence. She cared deeply for her family and friends, as well as for her community.

Jane was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in 2009. For five years, she battled the cancer through multiple surgeries, radiation therapy and continuous chemotherapy. Throughout those five years, she made hundreds of visits to the Concord Hospital Payson Center; at each visit she determinedly walked up the two-story staircase rather than take the elevator, just to prove she still could. Jane always loved the outdoors, and walked her dogs along Sewells Falls almost every week, despite her illness. Her other love was traveling. She made many trips with her family throughout her lifetime, including a six-week cross-country trip in a Winnebago, a two-week Winnebago tour of Canada and three weeks in Europe. During the five years of treatment, she went zip lining, took a cruise to the Carribbean, traveled to Illinois, Hong Kong and China (twice). Two weeks ago, she and her husband Michael made a trip to Arizona, where they explored the Kit Observatory, Saguaro National Park and took a horse drawn carriage ride while learning the history of the city of Tucson.

Jane was born in Providence, R.I. in 1953, to Wilfred and Norma Surprenant. She met her husband Michael Borek in Boston in 1975 and married in 1982, she was the love of his life. They worked together so that she could fulfill her dream of becoming a registered nurse and she received her nursing degree from Essex Community College, Lawrence, Mass. in 1980. In 2009, Jane fulfilled another life goal by completing a self-designed Bachelors' degree in Child and Family Studies through Granite State College and became a member of the adult high honor society Alpha Sigma Lambda.

Jane found her true calling as a school nurse, when she began working at Penacook Elementary School in 1995. Here, she spent 16 years touching the lives of students, their parents and her colleagues. During the summers, she also worked as a camp nurse, starting at Horton Center, and later Camp Spaulding, Bear Island, TL Storer and Wediko. Nurse Jane's office was always a safe place to rest where there was good conversation, sound advice and a warm heart. Her sense of humor always kept students and campers on their toes, and they returned the favor. In 2011, she made the decision to retire as school nurse at Penacook Elementary School, it was one of the toughest decisions she ever had to make.

Jane is survived by her husband, Michael; her two daughters, Alison and Sarah; her niece and adopted daughter, Leah and two granddaughters, McKenzie and Hannah. Jane is also survived by her father, Wilfred Surprenant; as well as her sister, Margaret; and brothers, Edward and Thomas.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, April 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bennett's Funeral home in Concord.

Jane's life will be celebrated with a memorial service Friday, April 18, at 11 a.m. at Webster Congregational Church. A luncheon will follow at the Webster Town Hall.
