CORNISH - Mae (Rust) Champlin, 88, of Cornish, died Monday, November 26, 2012, surrounded by family and friends, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Charleston, W.V., April 13, 1924, to Enoch and Elizabeth (White) Rust.

Mae graduated from South Charleston (W.V.) High School and moved to Rhode Island as a young woman. During the Second World War she worked as an inspector of warplane propellers for Hamilton Standard Propellers in Pawcatuck, Conn. She also was proud of her volunteer service as a nurses aide in Westerly, R.I., during the war. Mae was a homemaker, raising four sons in Ashaway, R.I., and later worked as a private nurse and in nursing homes in and around Westerly, R.I. She retired in 1989 after 18 years as a food service worker for the University of Rhode Island, where she also took creative writing courses.

A lifelong Christian, Mae attended Central Baptist Church in Westerly, R.I., Babcock Chapel in Ashaway, R.I., and the United Church of Cornish. She was a member of the Cornish Garden Club and the Cornish Grange. She was an avid quilter and gardener, an excellent cook, a connoisseur of ice cream sundaes and enjoyed long walks with her dogs and family, savoring the beauty of God's world.

Mae is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, G. Byron Champlin, Jr., of Cornish; and sons Byron O. and wife Susan, of Concord, Gregory and wife Judy of Henniker, Jeffrey and partner Eileen Cardillo, of Ashaway, R.I., and Joseph, of Cornish. Also grandchildren Serena Molaison of Houston, Lt. Nathaniel Champlin, USCG, of Coos Bay, Ore., Brent Champlin of Henniker, Emma and Madeline Champlin of Concord; and two great grandchildren. She also leaves her sister, June Limanni, of Bristol, R.I., many nieces and nephews and her dear friend, Teresa Collins, of Acworth.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Enoch, Jr., and Samuel, and her sisters Frances, Viola, Lena, Norma, Beulah, and Kathleen.

Calling hours will be held Sunday, December 2, from 3 to 6 p.m., at the Buckler- Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St, Westerly, R.I.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 3, at 11 a.m., at the Buckler- Johnston Funeral Home. Burial will follow in River Bend, Cemetery.
