FRANKLIN – Russell Louis Cox, 91, a longtime resident of Franklin died Friday, March 9, 2018, following a short period of failing health.  Russ was born in Laconia, Nov. 25, 1926, son of Walter and Beatrice (Marcou) Cox.  He moved to Franklin at the age of 12 and attended schools there.  Following high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, returning to Franklin in 1967.  He was employed at Webster Valve-Watts Regulator Company in Franklin, retiring from there in 2003.  Russ enlisted in the Navy as an Apprentice Seaman in 1944 and served on numerous ships during his 29 year Naval service, recipient of numerous awards including the Bronze Star. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer.

Russ enjoyed the outdoors as an avid hiker and photographer.  Backpacking the Appalachian Trail from Maine to New Jersey and a proud member of the AMC 4000 Footer Club, he loved the New England country side, hills and mountains.  When not hiking he was an active genealogist tracing the family back hundreds of years.  

He was predeceased by his wife, Dolores Elizabeth (Hines) Cox who died in 2012 and a step-brother, Eugene Bourdeau Jr. of Alaska died 2011.  He leaves, two sons, Kenneth M. Cox and his wife, Eva of Reading, Vt. and David C. Cox and his wife, Jane of Indiana and Florida.  Three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A step-sister, Frances I. Cox-Coen of Meredith, nieces, nephews and cousins.

According to his wishes, there are no calling hours planned.  

A graveside service with military honors will be held Tuesday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 D. W. Highway in Boscawen.
