Evelyn Faye (Benedix) Howard, 82, of Concord died Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Harris Hill Center following a long illness.

Evelyn was born July 30, 1929 in Elliot Hospital in Manchester. She moved to Lawrence, Mass. with her family when she was three and lived there until returning to New Hampshire in 1990 to live closer to her grandchildren. The daughter of Henry and Ethel (Davis) Benedix, she graduated from Lawrence, Mass. High School in 1947.
She loved puzzles, cards, the outdoors and her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. Her favorite place in the world was the family summer home on Glen Lake in Goffstown, where she enjoying swimming and gardening. Evelyn summered throughout her life at "Camp Echo" and considered Goffstown a second home.
Although she spent much of her life as a homemaker, she had many volunteer roles. She was life-long member of the Girl Scouts of America, serving for many years as a troop leader and a council volunteer. She led the cookie task force for many years for the Merrimack River Girl Scout Council and later the Spar and Spindle Council. She volunteered at the Concord office of the American Association of Retired Persons, served as treasurer of the Concord chapter of AARP, and was the treasurer of the Residents Council at Harris Hill Center where she resided for the last two years of her life.
She was an active member of her church throughout her life. While in Lawrence, she was a member of Christ Presbyterian /United Presbyterian Church. She was a member of South Congregational Church since moving to Concord more than 20 years ago.
She is predeceased by her parents; her husband of 60 years, Edward J. Howard, who died April 4, 2011; and her son, James Edward Howard.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patty (Howard) and Tom Fahey; her son, William Howard of Boscawen; two grandchildren, Ryan Fahey of Boston and Emily Fahey of Concord; two brothers, Harold "Bennie" Benedix of Holderness and Raymond Benedix of Lawrence, Mass.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Harris Hill who were so kind and caring of both our mother and father.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 4, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main St., Concord.
Funeral services to celebrate Evelyn's life will be held Thursday, April 5, at 11 a.m., at South Congregational Church, 29 Pleasant St., Concord.
Burial will follow in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
