Elden Herbert Dustin, 101, died Monday, August 6, 2012, at Havenwood-Heritage Heights.

Elden was born February 18, 1911 in Contoocook, the son of Daniel Herbert and Sylvia Ashby Dustin. He graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1928, and Bates College in 1932, Phi Beta Kappa. In 1952, he received his Masters in Education from New Haven State Teachers College – Yale University.

He married his beloved wife, Rosamond Durell Nichols January 1, 1934, and together they had three children, Sara F. Dustin, Susan D. Clarke and Daniel E. Dustin.

Elden started his career as Principal of Alstead High School at the age of 21, and continued on that track the rest of his working life. He accepted a job as Principal of Madison High School the following year, where his new bride soon joined him. They moved to Laconia a few years later where he assumed the position of Head Master at Belmont High School. In the early 1940's, he moved the family to Stratford, Conn. where he finished out his working career as Principal of Stonybrook Elementary School followed by a promotion to Vice-Principal of Stratford High, and culminating in his transfer as Principal to the newly built Frank Scott Bunnell High School where the Auditorium was named in his honor. Time away from education and after retirement was spent with gardening and volunteering at the Stratford Historical Society as well as being an active member of the First Congregational Church of Stratford, Conn. He and Rosamond retired to New Hampshire in 1993 to be near family and lived many happy years at Havenwood-Heritage Heights.

Elden is predeceased by his wife Rosamond; his brothers Dr. Eben H. Dustin and Daniel Edward Dustin; and his sister Adelaide Dustin Nichols.

He is survived by his three children; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in his or Rosamond's name to the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, or the Stratford, Conn. Historical Society, 967 Academy Hill, Stratford, CT 06615-0382.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 16, at 2 p.m. in the auditorium at Havenwood, 33 Christian Avenue, Concord.
