CANTERBURY - On Monday, April 1, 2013, Kathleen F. (Tixie) Schmitz, 89, of Canterbury, passed away in her home after a prolonged illness.
The Guest Book is expired.
Kathleen was born on March 31, 1924 in Duluth, Minn. to her parents William and Edna Fitzgerald. Kathleen was one of six children. Her family moved to Long Island, N.Y. when she was 14. In her youth she loved a great party, especially when it involved dancing. In 1941 she met her future husband. She married her husband Andrew J. Schmitz, Jr. in 1946. They were happily married for 46 years. They had and raised six children Andrew, Gregory, William, Kathleen, Paul and Edward. They also helped raise her sister's two children Arthur and Charlene after both their parents died.
Kathleen was the master at organizing children, their activities, and the household. Her home was always tastefully decorated with the treasures she brought home from her weekly auction excursions. Kathleen loved painting but her real passion became ceramics as she got older. She was a lover of dogs, cats and animals in general. Gardening and flower arranging were her favorite hobbies.
After her husband died, she moved to Canterbury, in 2001 to be near her daughter. Kathleen loved her home in New Hampshire and the area. In her later years she planned and still had gardens, but loved growing orchids because she could do the work herself. She enjoyed feeding and watching her wild birds.
Kathleen loved a good joke and her kids and grandkids were always making her laugh. She also had a great sense of humor. She had a strong faith and a stubborn spirit which helped her through many difficult times.
She is survived by her sister Helen Davis of Virginia Beach, Va. She is also survived by her four remaining children Kathy Rice of Canterbury, and Andrew J. Schmitz III, Paul F. Schmitz, and Edward G. Schmitz of Huntington, N.Y. She is graced with 14 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
We will miss her humor and her indomitable spirit.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any children's
. She especially liked St. Jude's Hospital.
