PEMBROKE – Mrs. Jean Ann (Lanza) Talford, a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, who enjoyed life and made others happy with her joyous laugh, died Friday, April 25, 2014, at the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen. She was 81.

Born in Concord on July 13, 1932, Jean was the daughter of Thomas and Carmela (Vitale) Lanza. She graduated from Concord High School in 1950 and worked for 38 years for Dictaphone Corporation in Concord.

Jean was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the John J. Maguire American Legion Post #28 of Suncook. She was a past president and historian for the Post and had also held positions on the District 5 state level. She loved to read, create albums from her many photographs, and knit. Jean had many friends and laughed easily. She was known for her willingness to whip up her famous carrot cake for any occasion.

Jean was predeceased in 2010 by her husband, Benjamin Talford, to whom she had been married for 58 years; and in 1984 by her daughter, Susan. Jean and Ben were devoted to each other and their family, and loved to travel together. She kept up with current events and was determined to vote in the most recent election, despite her failing health.

She is survived by her son, Michael Talford; her son, William Talford, and his wife, Catherine, all of Pembroke; her daughter, Cindy Foote, and her husband, Jeffrey of Concord; six grandchildren, Jason and Erik Smith, Benjamin Talford, and Meridith, Hannah and John Foote; and one great-granddaughter. Jean is also survived by three siblings, Thomas Lanza of Concord, Frank Lanza of Montpelier, Vt., and Eleanor Hodgkins of Concord; and many nieces and nephews.
