Helen L. (Stubbs) Constant, 92 years of age, passed away peacefully after a period of declining health June 5, 2014, at Hospice House.
Helen was born to Walter W. Stubbs and Elizabeth A. (Reddick) Stubbs on Dec. 5, 1921, in Middletown, Ohio. Her family left Ohio and lived for many years in Cuba, N.Y. They moved to Concord in 1930. It was here she met and fell in love with her future husband Alpha (Skeggar) Constant.
She graduated from Concord High School in June of 1939 and from Concord Business College in 1940 as a secretary and accountant/bookkeeper. She was employed by William E. Martin Flying Service at Concord's airport. She loved planes and received her personal pilot's license in 1940-1942.
During World War II while "Skeggar" was in the Army stationed in Germany, she and her baby daughter moved back to Cuba, N.Y., and lived with her parents. She worked at Acme Electric in Cuba, N.Y., from 1943 to 1945.
Upon returning to Concord and raising her family, she worked as a secretary for the American Legion Department of New Hampshire for 15 years, State of New Hampshire Department of Public Health/Probation, Governor's Commission on Crime and Delinquency and the Department of Corrections. She retired from the State of New Hampshire in 1984.
Other activities she enjoyed: joining Wesley United Methodist Church (formally First Methodist Church) at age 12, joining the Girl Scouts and earning the Golden Eagle Award. She became a Girl Scout troop leader for approximately 10 years. She was a member of the Rainbow, working her way through the chairs to the position of worthy adviser. She was a member of Fidelity Rebekah Lodge #14 in Concord for over 60 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 58 years. She was a 58-year member of the 8/40 of which she was department chapeau.
She was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 53 years, "Skeg"; her parents; brother, Robert Eugene Stubbs; and sisters, Mable Pierce and Mary Truax; grandsons, Joshua Mitchell and Joshua Norris.
She is survived by her four daughters: Mary L. White and companion Gene Tucker of Hopkinton, Betty Paradie of New London, Anne and husband Ross Nash of Grants Pass, Ore., and Helen (Cookie) and her husband John Robinson of Concord, and Deane Mae.
She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Constant; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. She was a wonderful mum and best friend to all of us.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff, nurses, LNAs and friends Helen made while at Presidential Oaks. Also, the wonderful care she received while in Hospice House.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. with a celebration of her life to follow at 11 a.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Interment will follow at Blossom Hill Cemetery.
