NEW LONDON – Ernestine (Upham) Gay, 87, of King Hill Road, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 31, 2014, at her home with her cat, Sweetie, in her lap.

She was born in Boston on Sept. 9, 1926, the daughter of James B. and Geneva (Ash) Upham. Ernie attended schools in Massachusetts and moved to Indiana while she was in high school to care for relatives. She graduated from Colby Junior College in New London and has lived most of her life here.

Ernie was a newspaper delivery agent for the Concord Monitor for almost 55 years retiring at the age of 80.

She loved spending time with her cats. A very independent woman, she enjoyed caring for her lawn, gardening, working on the woodpile and doing household chores. Ernie liked to go to yard sales and enjoyed reading and watching the golf channel.

Members of her family surviving include five children, Ralph Gay III of Wilton Manors, Fla., Virginia Murdy of Venice, Fla., Dana Gay of New London, Barry Gay and his fiancée, Heather Brown of Newport and Sandy Gay of Claremont; and two grandsons.
