Eugene J. Schmidt, 93, of Concord, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Concord Hospital in the loving presence of his daughter Nancy and her husband Daniel J. Kocsis and daughter Jeanne.

He was predeceased by his wife Mildred; his daughter Marilyn Russell; and grandson Joshua Russell.

He was born in Clifton, N.J. where he attended schools and met his wife Mildred of 62 years. He had three grandchildren, Jason and Joshua Russell and Jessica Hunt. He also leaves five great grandchildren.

Gene was an Air Force veteran who served his country proudly in WWII as a tail gunner on a B-17. He flew in 18 successful missions over Germany. He often told his family how the crew would examine shrapnel holes in their plane following each mission. Once, the pilot averted disaster by having as much cargo thrown from the plane after enemy fire had destroyed an engine. This prevented the plane from crashing into the Zuider Zee.

Upon returning home from the war, he opened a very successful Gulf Service Station in Cliftonm N.J. with his father-in-law, Joseph Heller. He maintained this business for 30 years before moving to Bradford. He enjoyed fishing with his grandsons. He loved his raspberry and blueberry orchards with which he and Mildred took meticulous pride. They loved their life in New Hampshire.

A memorial service will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to N. H. Veterans State Cemetery, Boscawen.
