Walter E. Butts, New Hampshire State Poet Laureate died peacefully at home Easter, Sunday, March 31, 2013. He was born in Batavia, N.Y., September 12, 1944, to Russell Marlin Butts and Ruth B. Bowerman Butts of LeRoy, N.Y. where he was raised.
He was an Associate Professor of English for Hesser College for 11 years. For the last five years he taught and advised for the BFA Writing Program at Goddard College.
He is survived by his wife S. Stephanie; his daughter and her husband Amy and Chris Brand; his beloved granddaughters Chloe and Catherine Edwards and Riley Brand of Rochester, N.Y.; and by many poets, artists, students, friends, and admirers.
A public wake is planned for Friday, April 5th, from 5 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, April 6th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth.
A public Memorial/Life Celebration will take place Sunday, May 19th, from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Portsmouth Women's City Club, 375 Middle Street, Portsmouth.
Instead of flowers, donations to the Poetry Society of NH are being accepted. Checks should be made payable to the Poetry Society of New Hampshire with a memo that indicates "Walter Butts" or "memorial fund" or "Poet Laureate acct" and mailed to Gordon Lang, Poetry Society of NH, 170 Browns Ridge Road, Ossipee, NH 03864.
