ASHLAND - Doris G. (Graves) Barter, 87, passed away peacefully at Franklin Regional Hospital, Thursday, March 21, 2013.

She was born July 20, 1925, in Hopkinton, the daughter of the late Buel and Harriet (Tenney) Graves. Later she moved to Sheldon, Vt., and graduated from Enosburg Falls High School. She was an active school thespian, basketball player and a girl scout.

Doris moved to Concord, and worked for the telephone company. She married Paul H. Barter from Beverly, Mass. in 1947.

She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Doris was an avid gardener, floral arranger and tole painter, but her passion was birding. She belonged to the NH Audubon Society for over 57 years and was a participant of annual winter bird counts. Her favorite were bluebirds and they nested at her home on Old Loudon Road, in Concord over 30 years.

She also belonged to the Bow Garden Club and the UNH Extension Coop. Doris was a member of the Concord Heights Defense Fund which was instrumental in blocking construction of an asphalt plant in her neighborhood which helped protect wildlife.

Members of her family include three children, David Barter and wife Kathleen, of Hopkinton, Debi Kurz and husband Perry of Ashland, and Dori Clary and husband Jesse of McConnellsburg, Pa.; seven grandchildren, April Barter and Sarah Bissionette (Barter), Damon and Derek Goss, Daley Buckwell and Willow and Harrison Clary; one great grandchild, Mary Elizabeth Rondeau; also several grand-animals.

She was predeceased by her husband Paul; brothers Donald, Harold and Kenneth Graves; one sister, Edith Graves Chandler and her parents.

There are no calling hours.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m., at St. Marks Episcopal Church, 18 Highland Street, in Ashland. A summer burial and memorial is planned at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, in Boscawen.
