BENNINGTON, Vt. - Richard H. "Dick" Caswell, 89, a resident of Jefferson Heights, Bennington, Vt., died peacefully Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Middlebury May 25, 1923, he was the son of the late Henry Wright and Ginevra (Harlow) Caswell. Dick was a 1941 graduate of Middlebury High School. His college education at Middlebury College was interrupted in 1943 when he was drafted into the U. S. Army Air Corps following his sophomore year. Dick served with the 82nd Airborne and saw action in France, England and Germany. Following his discharge in 1946 he returned to Middlebury College where he was active in the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He received his Bachelor's degree in History in 1948. In 1951, Dick obtained his Master's Degree in History from the University of Vermont.
Dick married the former Anita Kichline April 18, 1954, in Durham.
He taught in the Bennington, Vt. school systems from 1951 until his retirement in 1985.
Dick enjoyed traveling with his wife and sports of all kinds, but his favorite pastime was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Anita Caswell of Bennington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard H. II and Maria Caswell of Bennington and Christopher S. and Catherine Caswell of Concord; six grandchildren, twins John and James of Bennington, Ricky and Mark of Cambridge, Mass. and Katelyn and Christopher of Concord; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dick was predeceased by a sister, Mary Jones; and two brothers, John and Henry Caswell.
Memorial services celebrating the life of Richard H. Caswell will be held Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m., at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington.
