Barnes Wesley Collinson
May 9, 1926 - September 17, 2013
Resident of Walnut Creek
Barney Collinson was born in Portland, OR, graduated from Star of the Sea High School in Astoria, OR, and enlisted in the US Navy
where he served in the Pacific during WWII
. Following military service, Barney joined his father in commercial fishing throughout the Pacific Northwest and Central America. He then went to work on Standard Oil tankers based out of San Francisco Bay where he met and wed his true love Barbara Thomas. As they started their family he decided to forgo the separations associated with a career at sea and went to work for the Gerber Baby Food Company from which he retired after 35 years in sales. He was a member of the Diablo Valley Lion's Club, a Troop Leader with the Boy Scouts of America, and a proud veteran.
Barney and Barbara settled in Walnut Creek in 1957 where for over 50 years they presided over one of the most open and welcoming homes imaginable. It is fitting that the "formal" entrance to their unique house was straight into the kitchen as you were immediately welcomed into the "hearth". Their warmth and humor and the comfort they provided will be a lasting legacy among their huge extended family; a family that includes many generations and an abundance of dear friends from around the world.
Barney is survived by his children and spouses: Tom and Barbara Collinson of Santa Barbara; Kacy Collinson of Santa Barbara; Cindy Collinson and David Giacoma of Clayton; and, Kristina and Blair Ruller of Diamond Springs. He will be missed by his 10 beloved grandchildren: Ben Collinson; Whitney, Makenzie and Kameron Lynd; Kate Cotruvo; Christopher and Perry Ruller; and, Amy, Gina, and Hank Tigri. He was preceded in death by his sister Sugar Springman in 1998 and by his dear wife Barbara 2010. He was blessed with many dear friends from childhood through the end of his life. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews also survive him. We will honor him by living his legacy of love, laughter, and family.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at the family home
